Augustin de Saint-Aubin Prints and Multiples
French, 1736-1807
Augustin de Saint-Aubin was born on January 3rd 1736 into a family of artists: his father Gabriel-Germain (1696-1756) was the King's embroiderer and his six surviving siblings (Charles-Germain (born in 1721), Gabriel-Jacques (1724), Catherine-Louise (1727), Louis-Michel (1731), Athanase (1734) and Agathe (1739)) were also artists. The eldest of the boys, Charles-Germain, became a draughtsman and embroiderer like his father, Gabriel-Jacques? is considered one of the most brilliant draughtsmen of the 18th century, Louis-Michel became a painter at the Sèvres porcelain manufactory and Athanase an actor, while his two sisters were also talented draughtswomen.
During his lifetime Augustin de Saint-Aubin's fame as a draughtsman and engraver far out-shadowed that of his twelve-year-old elder brother Gabriel, but the Goncourt brothers initiated research into the French 18th century art sphere which gave back its pre-eminence to Gabriel’s works.
Initially trained by his brother Gabriel, the young Augustin continued his apprenticeship with the engraver Etienne Fessard (1714 - 1777) and very quickly set his sights on becoming an engraver.
Accepted to the Académie Royale in 1771, he was never admitted because he did not submit his reception piece. This did not prevent him from having a successful and very prolific career as an engraver, since his output is estimated at more than 1,300 engravings.
Portraits - whether drawn or engraved - constitute the best part of his work and also the most sought-after, particularly by the Goncourt brothers, who owned several portraits among the dozen or so drawings of Augustin de Saint-Aubin they had collected/in their collection.to

Born in Washington, D.C. in 1940. Raised in Washington, D.C. and newly graduated from high school, he flew to Europe living off and on in Paris and London. During this time, he designed costumes for Jimi Hendrix, worked as a graphic designer for the Beatles as well as Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Returning to New York, he dedicated his life to art after a surprise success with his first show in 1971 at the Willard Gallery in NYC. Ed's images are Zen-like in their simplicity and grace rendered in a flat, graphic style that recalls Japanese Ukiyo-e prints. His watercolors are luminous, like the rest of his representations regardless of the medium. The Japanese inspired ukiyo-e style woodblock prints and lithograph works he created at Tyler Graphics in 1980 contain a 20th century "floating world" sensibility. Ed's wish was to bring harmony, color, and a meditative stillness to this chaotic planet. He did so in a gentle and powerful way, always as an expression of his deep gratitude for the love and beauty, friendship, and concerns he held dearest. His first solo exhibition was in 1971 at New York's legendary Willard Gallery on the recommendation of Agnes Martin. Baynard went on to have exhibitions at galleries including Betty Parsons Gallery, New York (1973); Marian Goodman Gallery, New York (1977); John Berggruen Gallery, San Francisco (1980); and Barbara Gladstone Gallery, New York (1980/81).. Baynard manages to retain a simplicity of form inspired by a love of Japanese Woodblock prints. His new works reflect the same poetry of his earlier paintings, retaining his stylized compositions with their Zen like minimalism and Oriental calm, along with a new sense of rhythm and movement. Baynard uses familiar themes such as flowers, plants, pots, and vases, incorporating them into his delicate watercolor still lifes, thus creating stunning visual feasts. He was included in the 1972 Landscape exhibition at MoMA NY alone with other luminaries James Boynton...

Reuven Rubin 1893 -1974 was a Romanian-born Israeli painter and Israel's first ambassador to Romania.
Rubin Zelicovici (later Reuven Rubin) was born in Gala?i to a poor Romanian Jewish Hasidic family. He was the eighth of 13 children. In 1912, he left for Ottoman-ruled Palestine to study art at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. Finding himself at odds with the artistic views of the Academy's teachers, he left for Paris, France, in 1913 to pursue his studies at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. At the outbreak of World War I, he was returned to Romania, where he spent the war years.
In 1921, he traveled to the United States with his friend and fellow artist, Arthur Kolnik, with whom he had shared a studio in Cernovitzu. In New York City, the two met artist Alfred Stieglitz, who was instrumental in organizing their first American show at the Anderson Gallery.Following the exhibition, in 1922, they both returned to Europe. In 1923, Rubin emigrated to Mandate Palestine.
Rubin met his wife, Esther, in 1928, aboard a passenger ship to Palestine on his return from a show in New York. She was a Bronx girl who had won a trip to Palestine in a Young Judea competition. He died in 1974
