Sawrey Gilpin came from an old Cumberland family and pursued a career as a sporting painter—a path he was encouraged to follow as a young man by the Duke of Cumberland, best known for his role in suppressing the Jacobite rising of 1745. Though based primarily in London, Gilpin maintained strong ties to the North throughout his life. He attracted the patronage of many northern sportsmen, including the passionate hunting enthusiast Colonel Thornton of Thornville Royal, for whom he painted numerous works. While Gilpin has often been overshadowed by his incomparable contemporary George Stubbs, he nevertheless stands out as a leading painter of horses and animals in his own right.
