Pablo Picasso Figurative Prints

Spanish, 1881-1973

One of the most prolific and revolutionary artists the world has ever seen, Pablo Picasso had a tremendous impact on the development of 20th-century modern art. Although he is best known for his association with the Cubist movement, which he founded with Georges Braque, Picasso’s influence extends to Surrealism, neoclassicism and Expressionism.

“Every act of creation is, first of all, an act of destruction,” the Spanish artist proclaimed. In Picasso's Cubist paintings, he emphasizes the two-dimensionality of the canvas, breaking with conventions regarding perspective, foreshortening and proportion. Picasso was inspired by Iberian and African tribal art. One of his most famous pre-Cubist works is Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907), a painting considered immoral and shocking at the time for its depiction of nude women whose faces resemble Iberian tribal masks.

Picasso made many portraits in this style, most often of the women in his life, their expressively colored faces composed of geometric shards of surface planes. In Woman in a Hat (Olga), 1935, he painted his first wife as an assemblage of abstract forms, leaving the viewer to decipher the subject through the contrasting colors and shapes. Picasso was a tireless artist, creating more than 20,000 paintings, drawings, prints, ceramics and sculptures. Tracing his life’s work reveals the progression of modern art, on which he had an unparalleled influence.

This engraving, printed on the presses of Arnéra in Vallauris, was presented in a special box. About the Artist: Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, and ceramicist whose extraordinary vision and restless creativity reshaped the trajectory of modern art. Born in Malaga, Spain, Picasso demonstrated exceptional talent from an early age, studying at the Royal Academy of San Fernando before settling in Paris, the artistic epicenter of the early 20th century. There, his pioneering spirit gave rise to groundbreaking movements, most notably Cubism, developed alongside Georges Braque, which revolutionized visual representation by deconstructing form and perspective. Over his prolific seven-decade career, Picasso’s work evolved through distinct stylistic periods—the Blue, Rose, African, and Classical phases—culminating in a body of art that embraced experimentation, emotional depth, and innovation. His influence and dialogue with fellow visionaries Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray shaped the foundation of modernism, while his legacy continues to resonate through the work of post-war and contemporary artists such as Banksy, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, and Jasper Johns. Together, these artists collectively expanded the boundaries of art in the 20th and 21st centuries. Picasso’s staggering output of more than 20,000 works—spanning painting, sculpture, ceramics, drawing, and printmaking—embodies his belief that “art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” His creations are housed in the world’s foremost museums, including the Musee Picasso in Paris, MoMA in New York, the Guggenheim, and the Tate in London. The highest price ever paid for a Picasso artwork is approximately $179.4 million USD at Christie’s New York in 2015 for Les Femmes d’Alger (Version O) (1955). Picador debout avec son cheval et une femme (Picador, Woman, and Horse), 1959
By Pablo Picasso
Located in Palo Alto, CA
Considered to be one of Picasso’s monumental linoleum prints, Pablo Picasso Picador debout avec son cheval et une femme (Picador, Woman, and Horse), 1959 is a large-scale artwork that captures the essence of this artist’s innovation and minimalist creativity. His simple lines curve and undulated together to form the characters of the piece: the woman – feminine and robust, the horse – whimsical and characteristic, and the picador – strong and masculine. All three subjects create a triad composition making way for a harmonious and balanced piece. The entire work exudes an air of femininity and mystery, all set against a backdrop of a misty grey helping to create Picasso’s sensual environment of intrigue. Created in 1959, Pablo Picasso Picador debout avec son cheval et une femme (Picador, Woman, and Horse) is a color linocut on Arches paper hand-signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 – Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right margin. Numbered 21/50 in pencil in the lower left margin, this work was printed by Arnéra, Vallauris and published by Galerie Louise Leiris, Paris. Catalogue Raisonné: Pablo Picasso Picador, Woman, and Horse (Picador debout avec son cheval et une femme), 1959 is fully documented and referenced in the below catalogue raisonnés and texts (copies will be enclosed as added documentation with the invoices that will accompany the sale of the work): 1. Pablo Picasso, The Flies, from Verve, Revue Artistique, 1951
By Pablo Picasso
Located in Southampton, NY
This exquisite lithograph by Pablo Picasso (1881–1973), titled Les Mouches (The Flies), from Verve, Revue Artistique et Litteraire, Vol. VII, No. 25–26, originates from the 1951 issue published by Editions de la revue Verve, Paris, under the direction of Teriade, Editeur, Paris, and printed by Draeger freres, Maitres-Imprimeurs, Paris, October 25, 1951. This remarkable composition exemplifies Picasso’s dynamic postwar period in Vallauris, where he explored themes of mythology, vitality, and the human spirit through bold forms and radiant color. Les Mouches reflects Picasso’s fascination with symbolism and everyday life, transforming a simple subject into a poetic expression of rhythm, humor, and artistic freedom. Executed as a lithograph on velin du Marais paper, this work measures 14 x 10.5 inches. Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the superb craftsmanship of the Draeger freres atelier, renowned for its collaborations with the leading modernists of the 20th century. The cover and the frontispiece were specially composed by the artist for this work which was completed to print on the presses of the Maitres-Imprimeurs, Draeger freres on October 25, 1951. About the Publication: Verve, Revue Artistique et Litteraire was one of the most influential art periodicals of the 20th century, founded in Paris in 1937 by the visionary Greek-born publisher Teriade (Stratis Eleftheriades). Conceived as a synthesis of art and literature, Verve brought together the greatest modern artists and writers of its time—Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Georges Braque, Joan Miro, Fernand Leger, and others—alongside poets and philosophers such as Paul Eluard, Albert Camus, and Jean-Paul Sartre. Each issue was a work of art in itself, luxuriously printed by master lithographers such as Mourlot Freres and produced in collaboration with leading typographers and designers. Verve became a platform for avant-garde creativity, publishing original lithographs and essays that reflected the evolving spirit of modernism. Matisse collaborated closely with Teriade from the magazine’s inception, producing some of its most iconic issues, including those devoted to his paper cut-outs. The final Verve issue of 1958, which featured La Tristesse du Roi and the Nu Bleu series, stands as a testament to Matisse’s enduring genius and to the publication’s legacy as the definitive meeting of art, poetry, and printing craftsmanship in 20th-century France. About the Artist: Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, and ceramicist whose extraordinary vision revolutionized modern art and defined the visual language of the 20th century. A child prodigy from Malaga, Spain, Picasso’s career spanned more than seven decades and encompassed an astonishing range of styles and innovations—from the melancholic Blue and romantic Rose periods to his pioneering invention of Cubism with Georges Braque, which shattered conventional notions of perspective and form. Influenced by the bold expressiveness of El Greco, the structure of Cezanne, and the vitality of African and Iberian sculpture, Picasso became a central figure of the Paris avant-garde, working in creative dialogue with contemporaries such as Henri Matisse, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray. His insatiable experimentation extended across painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture, forever expanding the boundaries of artistic expression. A master of reinvention, Picasso profoundly shaped generations of artists who followed—from Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney, and Jean-Michel Basquiat to Jeff Koons and Banksy—cementing his status as a timeless cultural icon whose works remain among the most sought after worldwide. His landmark painting Les Femmes d’Alger (Version “O”) achieved a record-breaking sale of $179,365,000 at Christie’s, New York, on May 11, 2015, affirming Picasso’s enduring legacy as one of the most influential and valuable artists in history.
