An immense and heavy bronze by the noted artist Jeff Day. he is currently in China but we managed to converse with him. He identified the work and the approximate year it was cast and how heard it was to make. He thinks he signed it although we can't find his mark. it is quite impressive and has a beautiful gold flecked patina. There is a fracture in the center small and hard to spot that occurred in the casting. This is a unique piece. There are some minor losses to the patina near the base and minor nicks and scratches. The base has been repaired in one corner. One other corner is missing the wood trim, pictured. The piece and shows its age with age appropriate wear. A great bronze wonderfully patinated and mounted on a slate base. It is signed Schumacher and dated 1989. We were lucky to acquire a number of this artist's works. From a 2012 article the following provides some insight into the artist: Gloucester TWP, Camden County College’s Marlin Gallery will present works by the late Cherry Hill sculptor Frederick Schumm in the show “Retrospective” starting March 21. Schumm was a native of Colorado Springs, Colo., who served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. Driven by an interest in whittling and sculpture, he used G.I. Bill funds to develop his talents with study at the Colorado Institute of Fine Arts. In the early 1960s, he developed an original method for casting small bronzes at the same time that he was designing and helping to construct a sculptural playground for the Colorado Springs Parks Department. A great whimsical colorfully painted lifesize wood sculpture of a nude. The base has been re-painted black. It is signed on the leg Schumm, 1995. The artist's statement from a 2007 article follows; Fred Schumm does not view life through rose-colored glasses. He doesn't have to. Schumm, Rowan University's artist-in-residence, is a former U.S. Marine who lived through some of the most horrific battles of World War II. He served at Peleliu -- two months of carnage on a tiny Pacific atoll where 12,000 perished - and then four long months on the bloodied isle of Okinawa. Since then, Schumm, 82, has mostly tried to see life's beauty. It's sort of like how sunlight, warm but ordinary to the naked eye, is refracted into myriad, impossibly beautiful combinations of color when viewed through a kaleidoscope. And, like sunlight, he finds art everywhere. "Inspiration is all around but mostly I'm inspired by the ancients," Schumm said recently. "I love Prehistoric African carvings, the works of ancient Greeks, Japanese and Chinese. I especially love Eskimo work." The celebrated sculptor loves Eskimo work so much he once hitchhiked from his home state of Colorado to Alaska just to see native carvings. "I wanted to see the TOTEM poles," he said. "The Alaskan Indians were fantastic artists." Schumm, artist-in-residence since 2003, works with various hardwoods, stone, even metals. A beautiful large glazed terracotta sculpture by the noted East Hampton based artist Phyllis Hammond. It is quite large and extremely well done. It is signed Hammond lower back and the artist has identified the piece as having been done in the late 1970s. It appears to have been made in two parts and then joined. A brief biography from her website follows: Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Phyllis has a BS in Education (fifth year graduate certificate) Tufts University, School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA. A beautiful colorful sculpture by the noted artist Bijan Bahar. Bijan created this incredible sculpture by first creating a lucite box and then filling it with epoxy resin. before the resin hardened he filled it with found objects of color. after it dried he cut the sculpture artfully into two pieces. it was created in the mid 1990's and is signed and numbered 1/1. It is in good age appropriate condition with some crazing to the seams where the glue has crazed. There are some surface scratches and minor nicks as well. A nice group of three triangle shaped and faceted Lucite sculptures done and signed Bijan Bahar in the 1970s. The artist confirmed the timeframe himself. They are each signed and have been buffed out a bit by the artist himself. They still retain some surface scratches and imperfections with some edge roughness as the artist wanted them to retain some semblance of their true age. The tallest dimensions are given below, but the middles one is approx 15" tall, 6.5" W and 1.75" deep. The smallest is 13" tall, 6" wide and 1.5" deep.
