This delightful cast bronze statue depicts Jean-Baptiste Poquelin (French, 1622-1673), known as Molière; a wonderful historical study that captures the playwright and actor as a carefree youth. Reclined in a worn out chair, and judging by the worn out covering and loose fringe and gimp this is likely the chair he is supposed to be upholstering.The young upholsterer's apprentice is spending his afternoon with a small book opened across his lap instead of his assigned task, and hasn't a care in the world, his tacking hammer held loosely in his hand as he is totally enveloped by the text. It captures Molière working for his father, who had purchased the post of valet de chambre ordinaire et tapissier du Roi, and was responsible for maintaining the carpets and upholstery of the furnishings for the King of France, a post that was often hereditary and that his father hoped to pass on to him one day.
The sculpture offers a glimpse at Molière's chosen path, much to the chagrin of his father, leaving the world of upholstery unfinished and following the written word into a world of creativity.
The modeling of the statue overall is superb. Gaudez is a true master of the genre scene in sculpture, and this this piece perfectly exemplifies his skilled capability to realistically model the human body in relaxed positions. Moreover, the modeling of the carved wooden chair legs, soft dangling tassels, individual book pages, and bunched fabrics is incredibly crisp, almost leading me to believe that we may be able to learn something about 19th century upholstery...

William Gale was a talented history and genre oil painter, born in London in 1823. He won many accolades as a student at Royal Academy Schools, and travelled to Italy in 1851 and the Middle East in 1862 and 1867. Due to his many influences , Gale's paintings are in an array of styles including sentimental, biblical, mythological subjects, portraits and orientalist pictures. Examples of his work are held by the Tate, Glasgow City Art Galleries and Museums and Art Gallery of New South Wales.
William Gale was one of the many artists who, upon finishing his study at the Royal Academy Schools, set out to explore the east: namely North Africa, Algeria, Palestine and Syria. These remote countries at the crossroads of civilizations captivated his imagination, which he explored through his work.
Following in the footsteps of the great Orientalists John Frederic Lewis and Jean Leon Gerome, William Gale evokes the Eastern Woman, the bright colors and delicate textures that can be found in the East. Parcel gilt and patinated bronze figural statue of a Water carrier with a pitcher on her shoulder. The contrast between the deep bronze and bright gilding is incredibly striking. The woman drips in gold jewelry and drapery, wearing arm bangles, a large necklace and outrageous earrings. Beautifully casted, the piece's details are crisp and well defined, with beautiful even patinas and gilding. She stands atop an exquisitely carved, two toned, wooden base made of three sections. A fluted column with a small garland nestled within each flute makes up the main body, while a bellied band carved to mimic tufted cushions or upholstery is sandwiched between the column and a black hexagonal ped.
Attributed to the Graux-Marly Foundry. Based at 8 rue du Parc-Royal in Paris in 1860, started by Jules Graux-Marly and continued by his sons into the later 19th Century. The firm exhibited at the 1878 Paris Exhibition and was well-respected for both their figurative sculptures and decorative ornaments.
