This fine painted decorated planter in the manner of Angelica Kauffman was created in England circa 1890 to 1900. Hepplewhite in style the planter was made in England during the Edwardian era. This time saw a great rise in revival styles and culminated with the out break of the first world war. Hepplewhite design is most often associated with fine detail contrasting wood veneers and inlay , delicate painted details and a definite reference to historical precedents. Referencing Kauffman herself the piece is reminiscent of works in her historical painterly style. She i known to have painted a number of commissions on furniture while living in England as well a being one of only two female founding members of the Royal Academy. She classified herself as a painter of historical imagery but is also known for her many significant painting and portraits and scenes of late 18th century upper class life. This pair of modernist low tables designed by Wolfgang Hoffmann for Howell were made circa 1938 and are in excellent almost original condition. The chrome is completely original and has almost no pitting or discoloration. The lacquer appears to be from the 1960s and we have had it polished out to maximize its shine and luster and is in good order as well. The tables retain original Howell labels to the underside. Wolfgang Hoffmann is the son of Joseph Hoffmann. Born in Vienna and trained to be working under his father's staff he married and moved for his early carrier to New York. His wife and he opened a design studio to create interior furniture and design for the modernist movement and was featured in House and Garden in 1929 with his custom furniture designs. In 1932 he was asked to contribute to the design and color scheme of the Chicago Worlds Fair as well as design the furniture and layout of the exhibits lumber industry house. This lovely old tray made circa 1860 is inlaid with mother of pearl and tole decorated with flowers set into a lustrous lacquer surface applied to the tinware tray. The flowers are painted in a lively and realistic manner and the tray is further decorated with a meandering border of flowers and vines in gilding and colors along the edge of the dished section of the tray and then again on the broad flat area of the tray's edge. The stand in a Regency form is also decorated in similar colors and with gold. This very finely cast bronze urn in an archaistic form was made in the very late 19th century approximately 1895-1900. Done with an apocryphal feeling to honor the ancient past, the vase is beautifully rendered in low relief in bronze covering almost the entire body of the urn. The predominant features are the divided taotie masks that compose the swelling middle body of the vase and also at the corners of the upper section. Crisp but subtle, the casting is clearly handled with great attention to linear form. The patina is very nice and consists of a modeled golden brown with a slight but very lite Verdigris color. The urn has an old rosewood base and lid that seems to have been purpose made for the object. Finally, the whole is set off with a carved jade finial...
