A MASSIVE, 18 SEATER, LATE-19TH CENTURY, ANTIQUARIAN, REFECTORY TABLE, with an elm top, boxwood and parquetry frieze and oak base 3.68m 145" long - It is virtually impossible to source C17 and earlier dining tables with integrity which are more than 274cm., 108 inches long & period models are narrow around 70cm or 27.50 inches wide - It is very rare to find a table of this size with parquetry decoration which was only used on the finest pieces and is sophisticated elevating its status. - The massive elm top is made from over 10" wide, beautifully figured boards, 1 1/4" thick - The bulbous legs on this table are typical of those found on drawleaf tables that were made in the third quarter of the 16th century. The bulbous or vase-shaped legs were of Flemish and German origin, introduced into England by immigrant craftsmen and through published designs such as those of Dietterlein and De Vries. In early Elizabethan examples, the vase-shape is very pronounced, the bulbs generally being carved with acanthus and gadroons, and terminating at the junction with the frame in Ionic volutes as in this example. - The top is detachable and unusually the base of table can easily be dismantled unlike the 16th century examples whose immovable nature caused them to descend through many generations in the same family, and Evelyn observes in a familiar passage that both in hall and parlour long tables " were as fixed as the freehold " '. Consequently drawleaf tables still survive today in situ some of the great collections, such as Hardwick Hall, while others have passed into the hands of museums such as the Treasurer's House, York - Provenance : Private Collection UK. - This sculptor's modelling stand is usable and in working order - It also creates an atmospheric aesthetic as a display stand for sculpture, object or lamp. - It has been used for decades and accumulated different materials and colours giving it a unique patina. Heavy duty and versatile modelling stand. Tubular aluminium legs, which can be folded for storage and transport. The feet are constructed from steel rollers mounted in gun metal castings and can be locked. Fitted with a 35.5cm (14”) top made of 25mm (1”) exterior grade plywood. This is mounted on a pair of quadrant castings, which enables the stand to be tilted and locked for low relief work. The top also locks in a vertical position for storage and transport. The height is adjusted with the heavy duty screw thread and lock nut. Measures: Adjustable Height - 104cm to 130cm Depth of tripod base - 69cm Width of tripod base - 69cm Square wooden top - 35cm Double plywood top thickness - 5cm Alec Tiranti Ltd has been a leading supplier of sculptors equipment since the 19th century. Giovanni (John) Tiranti founded the Company in 1895, as John Tiranti & Co., in High Holborn, and within a year moved to Foley Street, London W1. He later moved to 13 Maple Street, W1, where the Company became John Tiranti Ltd. The Company remained there until 1941, when the building was destroyed by a direct hit with a bomb. Giovanni Tiranti died in 1926, and his two sons Alec and Dom carried on. Throughout all this time the Company sold sculptor's tools, materials and equipment as well as new and antiquarian books...

- The juxtaposition of modern design and this ancient map create a unique small table and conversation piece - This is the first map featuring the Isle of Man on its own. - It is also the first map of the Island based on an actual survey, undertaken by Thomas Durham 1595 and was first published by Speed in 1605-1611 and reprinted many times over the next century. This is the second state or print from 1610. The map is inset within a fruitwood box frame with a glass top. Supported by tapering stick legs. The map is based on a survey (and presumably a MS map) by Thomas Durham, of whom nothing is known other that he was paid by Sir Thomas Gerrard to make a survey of the Island. This survey, almost certainly for military purposes, arose from the disputed possession of the Island during which time Elizabeth had assumed control in order to prevent the Scots or the Spanish from using the Island as a base. Speed had used the Durham Map in his slightly earlier 4-sheet wall map showing invasions and battles of c1603/4 [ref: Shirley #261] - there are some differences from this 1605/10 map - Port Eran (rather than Earn on 1605);Knockalo point (= Contrary Hd) not on 1605;Spalbrecke shown west of Calf rather than E as on 1605/10.
