Lavishly hand decorated in Imari palette with colours of Iron Red and Cobalt Blue with gilt on an off-white ground, each rim with four projecting Lion's heads ending on four paw feet on a shaped base.
Condition: Superb condition for such early items, light wear to gilding at high points and some staining inside, evidence of gilt overpainting on one cover, see image. Both bases with iron red mark for circa 1815.

The Stara Role (Altrohlau) pottery works were established in 1810 by Benedict Haßlacher. The manufacture was bought by Augustin Novotny in 1824. Under his management employment rose to 100 workers. He also established three warehouses in Prague, Vienna and Pest. In 1836 Novotny started manufacturing porcelain. The factory production was constantly rising. In 1870 it employed 800 workers. The Stara Role (Altrohlau) pottery works were established in 1810 by Benedict Haßlacher. The manufacture was biught by Augustin Novotny in 1824. Under his management employment rose to 100 workers. The oblong base is decorated on both sides with a mask in a central medallion and foliage ending in palmettes. This piece is said to be made in Paris porcelain.
What is Porcelaine de Paris?
The history of Parisian porcelain began late in the 18th century, in the 1770s, when Limousin kaolin was commercialised and the monopoly on porcelain manufacture that protected the royal Sèvres factory was violated. The French Revolution contributed to the proliferation of factories definitively freed from the Sèvres monopoly. Most of these factories were short-lived. They suffered from the economic crises of the Napoleonic wars. Despite these difficulties, Parisian porcelain manufacturers reached their peak in the 1820s. Thereafter, their numbers declined steadily, as the hope of making a lot of money from porcelain was dashed. Hence the closure of factories or their relocation to the provinces. That's why it's consistent to call hard, unmarked porcelain...
