19th Century KPM Porcelain Plaque after Portrait by Christian Leberecht Vogel

About the Item

This charming 19th century KPM porcelain plaque depicts a painting after German artist Christian Leberecht Vogel's popular work Die Söhne des Künstlers, executed in 1793. The beautifully executed artwork features Vogel's sons Carl Christian and Friedrich seated on a stone floor, with the elder boy Carl Christian holding an open book in his lap which is illustrated with images of animals. Friedrich stares intently at the pictures in the book while his older brother glances back over his shoulder so that the light source fully illuminates his face. The intimate scene includes a rumpled raspberry colored fringed blanket trimmed in blue and gold at the lower left while the upper right provides a view to the outdoors. The porcelain plaque is housed under a burgundy velvet mat with a gilt metal fillet, all of which are mounted within a gilded wood frame. The molded frame is ornamented with dimensional details at the corners. The back retains a paper label for well known Philadelphia based McClees Galleries, established in the 19th century. The subject matter of this KPM plaque has timeless appeal and is nicely sized for a small space or placement on a gallery wall. A lovely piece.
