About the Item

Magnificent Basalt Head of Psammetique, his oval face with smooth cheeks tapering to his rounded chin, with wide, thin almond-shaped eyes, a sculpted nose and delicate full lips, framed by a magnificent head of hair. Beautifully executed! Approx. size: 13" high (23"; incl. base) x 12" wide x 9.5" deep. Egyptian XXVI Dynasty. A Great opportunity to own a piece of History! *Egyptian XXVI Dynasty. Psammetichus, d. 609 B.C., King of ancient Egypt, founder of the XXVI dynasty. Provenance: Exhibited in Paris Musée Decoratifs 1949: Égypte-France #63 Acquired at the Paris Exhibition in 1949 by Nandor Loewenheim. He landed in Halifax, Canada on the Empress of Scotland, Aug. 13, 1951. Mr. Loewenheim was the Austrian Consul General to Quebec *The Twenty-sixth Dynasty of Egypt (also written Dynasty XXVI or Dynasty 26) was the last native dynasty to rule Egypt before the Persian conquest in 525 BC (although others followed). The Dynasty's reign (c. 685-525 BC) is also called the Saite Period after the city of Sais, where its pharaohs had their capital, and marks the beginning of the Late Period of ancient Egypt Ancient Egyptians have always been famous for great statues, from a small statue of an Egyptian scarab or bastet cat to the giant statue of Ramses in Abu semble temple Egyptian sculptors succeeded in keeping their artifacts for thousands of years. The production of a statue from a hard stone such as basalt or granite was an extremely slow and painstaking process. As with all statues, the block was first marked with the basic shape of the statue. The figure was then roughly cut out and the features indicated using tools of hard stone. The time and manpower needed to produce the perfect finish on hard stone statues is difficult to imagine. By the time a statue was finished, the skin would be perfectly smooth, the jewelry and hieroglyphs crisply and concisely carved. This was not simply due to the professionalism of the sculptors. It was vital that each statue represented the perfect image of the king, deity or private individual, so that it could act magically in their place.
