About the Item

Sharing with you this unusual Dutch Decorated Kakiemon Style dish with a rooster. The dish itself is a white porcelain plate from the Kangxi period, ca 1700-1720. The painting is Dutch Enamelling from ca 1720-1730. Visisble is a scene of a rooster. The piece is unmarked. A small but distinct group of redecorated wares features compositions closely modeled on Japanese Kakiemon designs. These typically include asymmetrical arrangements, stylized birds, flowering plants, and shibagaki (柴垣), which literally means brushwood fence. Although the porcelain body is Chinese, the applied decoration is an intentional imitation of Japanese aesthetic conventions, often executed with a high level of precision and restraint. These pieces might have been made to cater to the 1720-30 fashion amongst the elite to collect Kakiemon. Since Kakiemon porcelain was not produced anymore and was originally only produced in relatively small quantities in Arita it was luxurious and expensive. The super high quality of the Dutch redecoration indicates that there was a lot of money to be made here. It would not surprise me if these pieces were made to deceive contemporary collectors that did not have modern research opportunities like photos and books. The decoration is often better than that on Delftware Kakiemon from the same period. The porcelain body most likely was more suited for precise work . Condition small restuck piece to underside rim and some minimal rimfritting and small chips. Size: 21.8x2.2CM Period 18th century Qing (1661 - 1912)
