Chinese Archaic Style Script Carved Stone Lidded Vessel

About the Item

An unusual Chinese archaic style script carved lidded stone vessel probably dating from the Qing dynasty or later. The heavily made vessel is made, we believe, from soapstone and comprises of a round bowl shaped pedestal base raised on a narrow round column shaped stem with a wide round bowl. The bowl has a domed cover with central raised handle which rests inside the rim of the bowl. The body of the bowl and cover are made in a brown colored stone similar in appearance to jade and the body of the bowl and cover is extensively carved in relief with Chinese script or characters. This is also applied to the inside bowl. The bowl has age wear to the foot and has a paper label attached to the base which reads PO YUEN with a written number, possibly a Chinese auction label. Provenance: An interesting piece from the private collection of a Gentleman. The lidded bowl is offered in good presentable condition with wear associated to age and use.
