About the Item

A small and well cast Chinese archaistic bronze tripod incense burner, censer, late Qing Dynasty, circa 1900, China. The small censer features a squat and bulbous body, very short neck, and slightly everted mouth, all set on three short feet. The body decorated with a series of lappets cast to the upper half to the body. The lappets cast with a fascinating archaistic abstracted design of a horned taotie mask, or perhaps a pair of sinuous confronting kui dragons. The designs cast in relief against an intricate and exacting lei when (thunder) patterned diaper ground. Originally used as a censer, the body would have been filled with sand or ash, and used to burn incense. The interior blackened from use, also showing water marks and associated patination. The exterior with a lovely honey bronze patina.
