Pair Chinese Court Lady candlesticks, c. 1760, Qianlong.

About the Item

A fine pair of Chinese porcelain candlestick figures, c. 1760, Qianlong Period. Modelled as Court Ladies, holding large lotus pods, wearing flowing robes, decorated in vibrant famille rose enamels, beneath capes, painted with sprigs of flowers. Their robes gathered at the waist by puce coloured cords, with tassels. The facial details are particularly well detailed, and they wear their black enamelled hair in a high double bun, held by gilt hair pins. The lotus pods form the candleholders. Height – 30.5 cm, 12”. Width – 10 cm, 4”. Depth – 8 cm, 3 1/8”. Condition – Typical repairs to the tips of the lotus pods, fingers, and the hair – commensurate with the age and type of figure. The Copeland Collection – Peabody Museum of Salem, W.R. Sargent, Fig. 61, p.133 -135 for a similar pair, and details of the figures. There are, of course, similar examples in many of the great collections of the World, be they Palaces, Stately Homes or museums.
