Pair of Red Lacquer Trunks - Early 20th Century

About the Item

Pair of Red Lacquer Boxes These square trunks have a base and are decorated with square metal hardware on the front. They would have been part of a lady’s dowry and are therefore lacquered in the color red which signifies luck, double happiness and goodness. The edges are decorated with black lacquer. The width of each box is 15.75 inches while with the the base the total measures 18.75 inches. One box has a black interior and the other has a red interior. Wood: Jumu Origin: Suzhou Period: Early 20th C.
