About the Item

A stunning and rare Javanese bronze footed offering vessel and cover, Central Javanese Period, 8th-10th century. The ritual offering vessel of elegant form, with a wide splayed foot and squat pedestal supporting the body of the bowl. The deep body of the bowl rising nearly vertically to a thick lip and recessed mouth supporting the substantial lid. The lid of the vessel slightly domed, decorated with concentric raised ridges, centered on a slightly raised nipple. The patina on the exterior of the vessel with an attractive overall silvery gray color of even tone. The patina to the interior is a completely different story. An remarkable display of beauty is revealed when the lid is lifted. The interior of both the vessel and lid is covered in a stunning natural patina of green malachite and blue azurite. Photos fail to capture the richness and depth of color. The vessel made for use in a ritual context to make offerings in temple worship.
