MEIJI PERIOD (1868-1912)
From our Japanese collection we are delighted to present this exceptional pair of Japanese cloisonné enamel vases by Ota Hyozo.
The vases are of slender hexagonal form with trumpet mouths upon edged feet, decorated with remarkable artistry characteristic of the Meiji Period (1868–1912). Each panel displays finely worked kacho-ga (bird and flower scenes), including cherry blossoms, lilies, chrysanthemums, daffodils, wisteria, and seasonal foliage, all rendered in silver wire of varying gauge.
The decoration continues with intricate geometric motifs at the neck, shoulder, and foot, bordered with vibrant blue enamel bands framing each panel. The scenes are enhanced with delicate scrolling designs to the top, while the rims show original gilded surfaces now gently worn with age. We have firmly attributed this pair to Ota Hyozo, one of the recognised masters of Japanese cloisonné, based on the meticulous composition, subtle colour palette, and refined form.
This pair is a superb example of Japanese craftsmanship from the Meiji period cloisonné golden era, dating to circa 1890. Suitable for collectors of Japanese cloisonné enamel or broader Japanese decorative arts, they also serve as highly decorative pieces with exceptional visual appeal.
