Chinese Carved and Painted Window Screen Panels, Set of Four, 19th Century

About the Item

A wonderful set of four Chinese carved, pierced, and polychromed camphor wood screen panels with images of the Four Seasons and Eight Immortals, Qing Dynasty, mid to late 19th century, China. Each panel divided into three sections. The top sections with images of birds and flowers. The bottom sections with pairs of mythical animals. The center section of beautiful floral lattice work and divided into two reserves. Subtle polychrome colors of blue, red, green and yellow, now faded to near pastel shades, highlight the carvings. The upper reserve fan shaped, and featuring images of figures in a garden setting with flowers for the four seasons. Each panel with an inscription for the season. The lower reserve of mutifoil form, with images of the Eight Immortals riding mythical beasts. Spring features orchids blooming behind a traveling gentleman scholar and his attendant. Below are the immortals Zhongli Quan and Han Xiangzi. Summer features lotus in full bloom behind a pair of figures in a garden pavilion setting. Below are the immortals Lu Dongbin and He Xiangu. Autumn features large sprays of chrysanthemum behind a pair of figures on a bridge, one with a tea service. Below are the immortals Lan Caihe and Li Tieguai. Winter features oversized plum blossoms behind a pair of figures approaching a stately home. Below are the immortals Zhang Guolao and Cao Guojiu. Fantastic and charming beasts roam the panels, some supporting the immortals.

A delightful Japanese six panel painted paper screen featuring the beloved figure Hotei, Edo Period, early 19th century. Hotei, called Budai in China, and known as the Laughing Buddha or Fat Buddha in the West, is considered to be an emanation of Maitreya, the Buddha of the Future. Chinese Early Qing Dynasty "Water and Land Ritual" Painting, 17th Century

Located in Austin, TX

An important Chinese 17th century early Qing Dynasty "Water and Land Ritual" painting, mineral pigment and ink on silk, mounted as a scroll, framed and glazed. The painting depicting groups of heavenly court officials and deities descending from the clouds to participate in the Liberation Rite of Land and Water. The figures all wear full, sumptuous robes, complete with hats indicating their station. The blue, green, red, black and white of the robes decorated with gilt dragon and geometric designs. This painting is interesting in that it incorporates Daosit deities and heavenly officials coming down to participate in the Buddhist rite. There are five distinct groups of figures, each with a small inscribed plaque. Some of the groups are identified as Tian Xian, or Heavenly Immortals. The group at the bottom left are identified as the Sanguan Dadi, or Three Great Emperor-Officials. The Emperor of Heaven is dressed in blue robes with gilt painted dragons. The Emperor of Water wears black robes. The Emperor of Earth wears yellow robes...
