About the Item

Amazing pair of late 19th/early 20th century Japanese Meiji period byobu screens depicting flowering plants and blossoms of the spring, summer, and autumn. Painted in the Nihonga school style with ink and natural mineral color pigments over a dramatic gold leaf square background. The paintings feature vibrant colors and textures on a large scale. Very impressive to view in person with the delicate glow of the gold leaf in the light. The paintings show well with an aged patina mostly to the joints and reverse side of the screens. The paintings are set in a black lacquered wood frame with a dark silk brocade border. Measurements are for each screen. Sold as a pair. From an estate in Beverly Hills, California. Placed end to end the screens create a painting over 24 feet wide. More photos available upon request.
