A Fine Carved Jade Toggle in the Form of a Recumbent Dog China, Qing Dynasty
About the Item
A Carved Jade Toggle in the Form of a Recumbent Dog
China, Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) or earlier
A finely carved nephrite jade toggle in the form of a recumbent dog, portrayed in a restful, curled posture with limbs tucked beneath the body and the head gently resting along the flank. The figure is sensitively modeled, with incised details articulating the facial features, paws, and haunches. A small star-like motif is engraved on the back. Notably, a hand-carved hole between the front paws indicates its intended function as a toggle (zhuizi), traditionally suspended from a cord attached to a belt or girdle in Chinese attire.
The stone is of a soft celadon tone with rich russet and dark inclusions, which are thoughtfully incorporated into the carving. Such toggles were both decorative and symbolic-dogs representing loyalty, vigilance, and protection.
Condition: Excellent condition overall. Smooth, lustrous surface with minor natural fissures and inclusions typical of period jade. No visible chips or repairs.
