Japanese Antique Wood Carving Raccoon Dog 1900s-1940s / Sculpture Wabi Sabi

About the Item

This is a very old raccoon dog wood carving made in Japan. This wood carving was made in the early Showa period (1900s to 1940s). It is carved from a pine tree. In Japan, there is a culture of placing raccoon dogs in storefronts as a good-luck charm for prosperous business. The long passage of time has created a very tasteful presence. The figure of decay is beautiful. The incredibly huge crotch ball is very unique and distinctive. It is a specialty wood carving that you will never see again. It weighs 3.5 kg. Since ancient times, people have created and passed down necessary tools from familiar materials to survive in the severe struggle against nature, and have nurtured a lifestyle and culture. By using these objects over a long period of time, they accumulate their flavor and reflect the way of life. The more severe the natural environment and the weaker we are, the stronger their power becomes. In today's world, where cheap and disposable products are encouraged, the act of repeatedly re-creating the things around us by modifying them opens up a new world. With this philosophy in mind, we collect beautiful, powerful, and unique carefully selected antiquities from Japan.
