About the Item

This is a wooden Buddha statue made in the latter half of the Edo period in Japan. The material used is cypress and other materials. The altar is made of pine wood. The name of this Buddha statue is Benzaiten. She has been one of the deities in Buddhism in India, China, and other places since ancient times. In Japan, she is known as one of the Seven Lucky Gods and is known as a lucky deity. She has a feminine appearance and eight arms. She often holds swords, hooks, wheel treasures, treasure sticks, bows, arrows, etc. in her hands. This Benzaiten also seems to have various tools, but they seem to have been broken or lost due to earthquakes, etc. There is also a spiral-shaped object on her head, which is called "Ugajin," a snake deity that appeared in Japan after the 11th century. It is thought to be the deity of grain. It is said that this merged with Benzaiten and changed into this appearance. Fortunately, the face and torso are intact and in good condition. It has turned black because it was placed in a village hall or house for a long time. There are some gold-colored parts here and there. If you look closely, you can see that the bottom pedestal is painted with a wave pattern. This is a Buddha statue that has been prayed for by many people.
