About the Item

A large and powerfully cast Chinese bronze censer in the form of two Buddhistic lions, Qing dynasty, late 19th century. The censer is well cast with a strong sense of movement, featuring a pair of fierce Buddhistic lions playfully antagonizing each other. Locked in a mock battle, the smaller lion sinks his fangs into the back of the larger lion. The larger lion arches his back, stepping on the tail of the smaller lion, and holding the smaller lion's paw in his mouth. The tail of the larger lion formed with a hollow, intended as a candle holder. The head of the smaller lion detaches to access the hollow body for burning incense. The smoke would rise through the mouth of the smaller lion. The bronze with an overall deep and rich dark brown patina, bordering on black.

The tail also with a separation where it meets the body. The back leg of the larger lion with a large crack, but stable. The other back leg of the larger lion with a possible repair.
