About the Item

Vintage Indonesian Kain Batik Tulis Parang, Jogja(Yogyakarta), Java 1940. A fine hand drawn wax resist painting by canting on cotton of a traditional Parang Rusak royal pattern of a broken knife diagonal pattern representing courage and steadfastness, this motif also signifies that the wearer is an unconquerable spirit, as symbolized by the wavy pattern that is like both the undulations of a keris Javanese dagger and the curls of the ocean’s waves. Parang rusak wearers are noble characters who can control the continuous waves of temptation in human daily life. As such, this motif is reserved for royalty and nobility. An additional keraton (Jogja palace) overlay design of 6 upright sawat (pair of Garuda wings) on one half and 5 upside down on the neighboring half. All batik dyed unto the selvedge in two vegetal colors with wax resist; a light soga brown and indigo blue on an unbleached cotton white reserve ground. Condition: Excellent. Size: 40.5 inches x 93 inches (103 x 236cm) Weight: 10.4 ounces (297grams) Circa 1940. Provenance: Private Collection, Prambanan, Java, Indonesia.
