About the Item

New finds from the old-established family house in Ibaraki pref, Kanto area, Japan. Had been kept with care at the 2nd floor to avoid the humidity , even it was used as the exterior material. Antique thick lattice sliding door, called Koshido - thicker version of Shoji sliding door with lattice, can both interior & exterior use. Manufactured in late Edo to Meiji period circa 1860s to early 1900s. Nowadays it's getting harder & more rare to find a sliding door with thick, strong lattices like this. thickness of each vertical lumbers are 1.3 in x 1.2 in (33mm x 30mm), almost square. This warm dark color with slight reddish hue comes from another Japanese traditional paint - actually dye - technic, persimmon tannin (kakishibu) & burnt pine ink. Original paint remains well and gives a nice wabi sabi touch. Made with traditional wood joinery without metal fastener, by professional craftsman called sashimono-shi, historically recognized separately from other furniture craftsman. There's similar lattice door in my listings, but this one has the back panel attached to the bottom area, and both used together. Actual item weight : 22.93 lb (10.4 kg) *** We're eco-friendly, organic-oriented vintage wood furniture & fitting seller. Avoiding the harsh chemicals as much as possible, using organic & traditional materials in the whole process, especially cleaning, repaint / refinish. - using non-toxic, eco-friendly method when cleaning & repairing the item - using organic & traditional materials (beeswax, linseed oil, persimmon tannin, burnt pine ink, etc) for repainted/re-finished items - repairing the necessary parts for long-lasting use
