Pair of 19th Century Barbezat & Cie Cast Iron & Teak Garden Chairs

About the Item

This very nice pair of garden chairs are listed in Barbezat & Cie's catalog of 1858 but continued to be made up until the latter part of the 19th century. This firm founded in 1855 succeded an early atelier founded by Andre Victor. They produced award-winning designs throughout the 1830s and 1840s Considered the French version of Coalbrookdale as both firms were awarded prestigious council medals in the Great Exhibition. The casting is very heavy and solid and amazingly the teak is still in great shape with only slight wear to the surface but still ready to use. The wood is of a beadboard style with a simple edge and tightly placed for comfort. Held in place with nuts and bolts the wood is held fast in place and appears to have never been changed or touched as the patina on the entire metal surface is of a kind. The iron appears to have only been painted once in a mellow green now almost completely gone and retains a very rich old rusty surface.
