Antique Italian Hand Painted Carved Wood and Gesso Pedestal with Marble Top

About the Item

Done in the Rococo style and dating from the mid-19th century, this substantial hand carved and painted gesso over wood pedestal presents with a ball motif decoration cascading down each of the thick serpentine shaped legs and finishing with a series of scrolling hand carved leaves and a ball foot. The legs are separated by a rope and tassel styled carved wooden banding and the entire piece is painted in a gilt over a muted green background. The pedestal top is done with a polished white marble insert.

Condition:

Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. No structural issues identified with this pedestal, however there are some chips and edge wear to several areas of the wood and gesso legs and top. Some subsequent paint loss also identified to these areas. No damage identified to the marble top.
