Carved by hand between 1760 and 1780, this substantial trough measures 201 cm wide × 130 cm deep × 71 cm high and weighs approximately 3,000 kg. The surface shows an authentic timeworn patina developed over centuries of use, enhancing its historical character.

Material & Craftsmanship

Crafted from solid French limestone (pierre calcaire), this trough was hand-carved from a single block. Its robust composition makes it highly resistant to weathering, while the natural stone’s subtle tonal variations and aged surface bear witness to its centuries-old origin.

Before the advent of microphones and speakers, orators would often address assemblies from elevated platforms known as “wine glass pulpits”. These podiums featured domed roofs called abat-voix, sometimes known as sounding boards, that would project sound outwards. Our walnut wood pulpit canopy is a fine example of such a device. Hand-carved and hand-painted in Italy in the 1700’s, our abat-voix is roughly octagonal in shape. Each of the sides have edges with luxuriously thick step molding, alternating between stained and gilded wood. Each of the corner cornices are adorned with gilded flower carvings, although some are missing. The interior of the canopy features a gilded open sun with sinuous rays emanating all around. Each of the sides are adorned with foliate margents surrounded by scrolls, again with some losses. All the edges are bordered with a thin layer of gilding. Pair of cast bell metal brass lemon top andirons with matching fire tools. The andirons feature oval lemon finials which sit on a Doric column with plinth, and the cast arched legs with spurs rest on finely formed slipper pad feet. The crossing between the feet is peened with a hand threaded iron rod which attaches to a fixed nut in the lemon finial at the upper end and is forged through to the forged iron log rest. The miniature lemon top log stop log rest is peened into the log rest 3" behind the fire dog.
