Technique: Gilt
Pair of Gilt Bronze Regency Firedogs, Attributed To Thomas Hope. England Ca 1803
By Thomas Hope
Located in Incline Village, NV
These firedogs (as they were referred to), while not really serving any utility, would have been used as decoration to enhance the visual aesthetics of the hearth, by being placed one to each side of the fireplace opening. I have attached 20 images to this listing. The last image shows how they would have been used in a fireplace setting. These highly ornate pair of gilt bronze firedogs are quite important and were, more than likely, the design of Thomas Hope (1769-1831), who created elaborate and innovative decorations whose features were influenced by his extensive travel through the Near East, Turkey, Egypt, Greece, and Europe, over a ten year period. He was the foremost interior designer during the Regency period and developed luxurious surroundings for his two lavish London residences during the early 19th century. They were decorated with items of his own design, along with those he had accumulated and collected during his travels. He introduced to the British aristocracy the term "interior design". In terms of collecting, and the acquisition of fine art...

Antique French Architectural Spiral Turned Giltwood Column Tall Pedestal Carving
Located in Forney, TX
A most impressive authentic antique architectural salvage hand carved gessoed and gilded solid wood spiral turned classical Ionic order column, with lavishly decorated shaft wrapped in trailing foliage relief carvings, topped with an integral capital with scroll volutes. France, 19th century, luxurious Baroque taste, almost certainly commissioned for and originally part of a Catholic church, this repurposed building element now mounted on a substantial white painted domed cylindrical base and fashioned into a highly decorative sculptural object / display pedestal / torchiere candle stand or potentially mounted as an electrified floor lamp / jardiniere plant stand or whatever else you can imagine! Dimensions (approx): 51.5" Tall, 13.5" Diameter Condition: Overall great antique condition with warm rich patina and brilliant luster. On sturdy later base. Likely regilded or touched up in the past. Strong, stable, structurally sound. Wear consistent with age, use, handling & exposure, including scattered nicks, chippy paint losses, exposing gesso, old nail holes from mounting, etc. Some fading, discoloration and surface fissures to base. Nothing that detracts from the aesthetics or functionality, but only adds to the authenticity, sophisticated antique character, charm, elegant warmth, and unique rich historical interest! The photos finish the description. Worldwide Professional Shipping / In-home White-glove Delivery Service available. Please allow up to eight weeks for delivery.
