Neoclassical Style Urn on Pedestal by Doulton & Co.

About the Item

A monumental neoclassical style urn on a pedestal by Doulton & Co. This striking piece was from a private collection in Ireland. Crafted between 1877 and 1880, it has the Doulton mark stamped on the socle. It would certainly be a statement piece for the exterior or interior of a grand home. The pedestal has an interesting and intrinsic design, with oak leaf swags around the top, and rams heads adorning each corner. Leaf wreaths are also displayed on each side. The urn has stylised lion heads to the base of scrolling handles, and gadrooning above the socle. Doulton & Co. Doulton & Co. have been pioneers of the pottery and ceramics world for more than 200 years. Better known today as ‘Royal Doulton’, the company was established in 1815 in Lambeth, London. The third quarter of the 19th century saw an increased demand for architectural and sculptural terracotta. Doulton & Co. were amongst others in designing a huge range of unglazed terracotta and garden ornaments, including this 19th century window planter.
