Nantucket lightship basket attributed to Mitchy Ray, 1900-50

About the Item

Large vintage Nantucket lightship basket with heavy rattan rim and stays. The basket features a hinged and carved oak handle which is squared off across the apex and carved with the initial "S". The brass hinges extend 2-1/2" into the sides of the bamboo weave on rattan stays. The turned oak bottom is hand scribed with two concentric circles. Later, and now largely removed green paint can be seen in a few areas of the bamboo lashings. The basket has shifted shape with the shrinkage of the oak base. Mellow color and condition consistent with age and use. American, Nantucket, 1900-50. Dimensions: 13" Diameter x 9" H (plus 6-1/2" handle)
