About the Item

A stylish and large Carnon Downs Pottery raku bowl made during the 25th anniversary by renowned potter Hugh West (British, b.1950) and dating from 1996. The lightly hand potted bowl stands on a very narrow round foot and is of wide rounded shape with a raised rounded edge with a matt white glazed body with small irregular black inclusions. The inner bowl is decorated in turquoise glazes with elements of red and the bowl has molded makers marks to the upper edge of the bowl along with and XXV mark used during the 25th anniversary in 1996. A stunning and finely made example and a wonderful display piece to add to any serious collection. Provenance: from the collection of a private gentleman and originating from the UK art market. In good overall condition

Eva Staehr-Nielsen Saxbo Mottled Brown Studio Pottery Bowl
Located in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire
Eva Staehr-Nielsen (Danish, 1911-76) was one of the most influential and important Scandinavian ceramicists. After completing her training at Copenhagen’s Art-Craftsman School she joined Saxbo in 1932, where she worked extensively with Nathalie Krebs. It was to become one of the most important independent studios for Scandinavian ceramics with leading designers like Axel Salto, Jais Nielsen, Hugo Liisberg as well as Staehr-Nielsen all producing designs for them. Staehr-Nielsen was highly influential at Saxbo and following its closure in 1968 she moved to Royal Copenhagen however it is her work at Saxbo which remains most sought after. Her work is held in the National Museum in Stockholm, The British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum in New York and her prices have steadily increased with demand over the past years.
