About the Item

An extremely rare and probably unique, dish applied with two open-mouthed quasi-simian creatures arm-wrestling created by Robert Wallace Martin for the Martin Brothers and dated 1884. The stoneware shallow dish is hand crafted in a flat butterfly shape with the arms of the creatures forming a carrying handle, their bodies underneath the edge of the dish and facing each other with their open mouths showing teeth and facing each other. Glazed in shades of ochre and green the dish is marked to the surface with makers marks and includes the date 1884. Further marks are also applied to the base. Provenance: Acquired directly from a private North American collection. The dish has had a break across one side which has been professionally restored with some light restoration to one creature’s ears. Nonetheless a rare and stunning example.
