About the Item

A Beautiful and Quite Unusual Meissen Porcelain Reticulated Centerpiece with Rams Heads Handles, Lions paw feet, and Wreath Border. The centerpiece is formed as a circular reticulated bowl raised on four paw feet. The structure is supported by molded garlands tied with pink ribbons, which extend around the base and connect the feet. The body of the bowl is pierced with an interlaced trellis design, creating a reticulated surface. At either side, the rim terminates in sculpted ram’s heads with curved horns and detailed facial features. The bowl is proportioned with a wide opening, gently tapering sides, and a reinforced lower section that transitions into the supporting base. The decoration includes hand-enameled floral medallions encircled with gilt bands, placed prominently at intervals along the reticulated wall. Each medallion contains detailed flower arrangements in naturalistic colors. Between the medallions, the pierced trellis design is highlighted with gilding and applied with pink enamel florets. A molded wreath border of green laurel leaves, tied with pink enamel ribbons, surrounds the upper edge, while smaller flower motifs are painted on the interior surface of the bowl. The ram’s heads are painted in naturalistic tones, with brown and cream horns, textured beards, and shaded faces, while the paws at the base are painted to resemble animal legs with defined claws. The piece is made of porcelain, a material perfected by the Meissen manufactory in the early 1700s. The techniques include reticulation, requiring precise cutting of the clay body before firing, followed by hand-applied enamel decoration and gilding. The molded elements such as the ram’s heads, paws, and garlands were separately cast and joined to the bowl before firing, allowing for three-dimensional detail. The double underglaze blue-crossed swords mark is applied beneath the base, confirming its manufacture at Meissen. The iconography combines natural and symbolic elements. The ram’s heads function as handles while also referencing strength and vitality. The laurel garlands and ribbons symbolize triumph and festivity, common motifs in European decorative arts. The painted floral medallions represent abundance and seasonal variety, with their placement reinforcing the ornamental rhythm of the reticulated wall. The use of animal paw feet evokes classical and neoclassical traditions, where furniture and vessels were often supported on leonine or caprine legs. The function of the centerpiece is decorative, intended for placement on a dining or reception table. Its wide bowl could serve to hold fruit, flowers, or other displays, though the elaborate reticulation and painted surfaces indicate a primarily ornamental role. The sculptural form with applied animals and garlands aligns it with table garniture sets designed for banquet displays in aristocratic settings. Historically, such works were produced at Meissen during the 18th and 19th centuries, when reticulated porcelain was a technical specialty of the manufactory. These pieces required multiple firings and careful assembly, making them complex luxury objects. The ram’s head motif and laurel wreath border show the manufactory’s interest in adapting classical forms into porcelain decoration. This centerpiece reflects the technical ambition of Meissen and its role in developing sculptural porcelain objects that combined functional and ornamental qualities within the traditions of European court culture.
