Antique Korean Ceramic Komogai Chawan with Tamagode Glaze
Located in Atlanta, GA
A ceramic tea bowl with milky white glaze made in Korea for Japanese market circa 16-17th century. The thinly potted bowl is in the shape called Hatazori-gata (curving-lip type) that is known as Komogai (or Kumagawa) type. It was named after the historical port of Komogai, close to Bushan in Gyongsangnam-do, southern coast of Korea, where these bowls were traded and exported to Japan in the 16-17th century. The white glaze that covers nearly the entire surface resembles the color and texture of eggshell, therefore is known as Tamago-de. This type of glaze is rather rare, and few examples exist. It was believed that the Tamago-de glaze was only made in Korea from late 16th to mid-17th century during Japan's Edo period. The tea bowl on offer bears typical characteristic of Tamago-de glaze. The smooth milky color glaze shows a fine crackle with scattered spots of flakes exposing the dark clay underneath. The glaze on the rim was largely worn off, so was on the base. There is a subtle indentation on the bottom of the interior known as kagami (tea pool). The ring base is relatively thick compared to the base and trimmed by the potter's knife. It appears delicate to the eyes, but it feels strong in the hands. The bowl comes with a fabric pouch...

Antique Korean Mishma Tea Bowl Chawan Joseon Dynasty
Located in Atlanta, GA
A Korean Hori-Mishima Chawan (tea bowl) circa 16th-17th century (Joseon Dynasty). The tea bowl is of an upright conical form supported by a high foot ring. It was decorated with incised brushwood fence patterns filled with white slip on both the interior and exterior surface. These dominant motifs were spaced by three encircling double lines. Seven chrysanthemum flowers (inka) were stamped on the lower interior surrounding a swirling tea well on the bottom. There are six spur marks known as Meato in Japanese on the interior bottom and a pointy spot in the center of the foot ring known as Tokin. Two crack lines were historically repaired by superb Kintsugi, adding a mysterious wabi-sabi appeal to the piece. The Hori-Mishima bowl was also known as Gohon Mishima. It was made in Bushan Kilns of the Southern Gyeongsang Province specifically for the Japanese market in the 16th-17th century, when the tea ceremonies in Japan demanded such ware. The bowl comes with a purple fabric pouch...

Huge Kaneaki Fujimori Collection Art Glass Platter Kato Kogei Japan, 1985
By Fujimori, Kato Kogei
Located in Melbourne, AU
Just wow! A huge, gorgeously colourful Kaneaki Fujimori platter. This will display equally well standing, hanging or flat (we prefer it flat because this emphasises the generous size). We love the shocking white of the background which makes the colours pop. We love the smooth gloss of the glass. We love the slightly off-kilter and ovoid shape. It’s a total winner! Kaneaki Fujimori for Kato Kogei 1980s - a classic piece of Japanese postmodern Art Glass. Signature etched to base and original sticker also attached. Red, Green, Yellow and Black are swirled through clear glass, over a milky-white background. Delicious and punchy. Not for the faint-hearted decorator. This piece is loud and assertive. Delightful and fun, with extravagant size and a glossy smooth finish to reflect light and attract the eye. There are some natural flaws which we’ve tried to illustrate in images. These include numerous small bubbles, mots and blemishes. The images are an example, with match-head for scale. Comes with a lucite stand to raise the plate a little higher off surfaces if desired. Kaneaki Fujimori is one of Japan’s preeminent artists and designers of the 20th century. Fujimori was born in Japan in 1935, graduating college in 1956. He majored in oil painting. He travelled to the US and worked in Chicago, Illinois, as a designer for a major ceramics firm. He returned to Japan in 1963, and became a freelance designer for various companies in Nagoya. At age 19, he had won the national art award (for painting) in Japan. Many other awards followed through the 1980s. At the time of the production of this work, he was the director of Kato Kogai, a ceramics and glassware company which was a major supplier to the international market during the 1980s. Reference to his work can be found in the book ‘1950s Then and Now’ by Richard Horn, a publication from the 1980s which compares original 1950s design with new 1980s design done in the 1950s style. He is most well known outside Japan for his lively 1980s ceramics...

Chinese Han Dynasty Green Glaze Pottery Bowl / Ancient Excavated Pottery
Located in Sammu-shi, Chiba
A country that existed more than 2000 years ago during the Han dynasty in China. What is called green glaze pottery has been made here. It is a pottery baked at a low temperature of about 800 degrees. When the lead glaze is baked at 800 degrees, it turns green. This was not used as tableware for daily life, but as a burial item. Such pottery was made only for those in power and high status. Why was it made? It was buried with a lot of pottery...

Shiko Shikou Munakata Rare Signed Japanese Pottery Chawan Tea Bowl Signed Box
By Shikou Munakata
Located in Studio City, CA
An exceptionally rare, wonderfully designed Chawan tea bowl by famed Japanese master woodblock printmaker/ artist Shiko Munakata (1903-1975) who is widely considered to be the most important Japanese visual artist of the 20th century and the Pablo Picasso of Japan. This hand-painted work clearly illustrates Munakata's whimsical side as it is of a Koma - a child's spinning top toy. Very few examples of Munakata's work in ceramics exist still today. The work is signed by Munakata on the base as well as the original wood protective storage box (his seal can also be seen faintly in the lower-left corner). The bowl has a small kintsugi or "golden joinery" repair - the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold - on the inside. As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise. Munakata who is often compared to Picasso was primarily associated with and a principal figure in both the Sosaku-Hanga (which stressed the artist as the sole creator ) and the Mingei (folk art) movements. His many accolades and awards include the "Prize of Excellence" at the Second International Print Exhibition in Lugano, Switzerland in 1952, and first prize at the São Paulo Bienal Exhibition in Brazil in 1955, followed by the Grand Prix Award at the Venice Biennale in 1956, and the Order of Cultural Merit, the highest honor in the arts by the Japanese government in 1970. In 1960 after returning from a year abroad exhibiting his work in the United States, the Horinji Temple in Kyoto bestowed upon him the honorary rank of “Hokkyo”. In 1962, he received the rank of “Hogan” from Nisseki Temple in Toyama prefecture. He also received a Medal of Honor in 1963 and the Asahi Shimbun culture prize in 1965. Munakata's work can be found in numerous international collections and museums including: The Britsih Museum, UK The Chicago Art Institute Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), NY The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met), NY The Philadelphia Museum of Art The Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM), Washington DC Kemper Art Museum, St. Louis And his own museum The Munakata Shiko...
