About the Item

Made by Wedgwood in England circa 1810, this pair of creamware dishes features a neoclassical border decorated with a band of green acanthus leaves separated by black darts. The border was handpainted using a stencil. Several variations of this design were used in the borders of ancient Greek and Roman art, particularly in architecture. During the 18th and early 29th centuries, Wedgwood's designers looked back to ancient Greek and Roman architecture for inspiration. This led to a revival of classical motifs, including this pattern. Wedgwood's creamware of the early 19th century was more highly refined and whiter than in the 18th century. The two-tone green leaves jump out from the refined creamware. Dimensions: Condition: Excellent Marks: WEDGWOOD Price: $215 Background of Wedgwood Creamware: Creamware is cream-colored, refined earthenware. It was created in the mid-1700s by the potters of Staffordshire, England. Foremost of the pioneers of creamware was Thomas Whieldon. He invented a wide variety of decorations for creamware. Josiah Wedgwood partnered with Thomas Whieldon from 1754 to 1759. When Wedgwood left to set up his own business, he immediately directed his efforts to develop creamware.
