About the Item

I am offering you for sale an antique box, dating back to the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 1990s, handmade in Italy according to the "Sorrento" tradition. Recently restored by a professional, the bowl is made of solid walnut wood inlaid with maple, cherry and walnut veneer. The geometric inlay decoration is enriched by a hand-painted design placed in the center of the box lid. The central decoration proposes a pastoral theme that was widespread in painting and porcelain making during the Roccoco movement. The pastoral scene is painted on maple veneer, its light color in fact makes the colors stand out. The brushstrokes sketch the figures with freshness as in the watercolor technique, creating skilful chiaroscuro effects. The scene depicted refers to the grape harvest, in fact, on a green meadow an amused cupid helps a young farmer to tow his goat which is carrying a basket full of bunches of grapes. The recently restored box is in good vintage condition. Small imperfections due to age and use are visible despite pad polishing. The locking mechanism works.
