About the Item

Hand-carved in Italy, this pair of giltwood candleholders are from the Baroque period. Based on the asymmetrical carvings of C-scrolls and curled leaves, this was most likely an early Rococo production, placing the candleholders in the mid-1700’s (1730-1750). Each candleholder is topped by five flat and scalloped edge iron bobeches with prickets. The outer bobeches and the center one rise higher than the other two, forming an undulating candle placement. A subtle concavity to the foliate motif base accentuates the rolling light display. Both candleholders are stabilized by a chamfered extension along the backside. At two and a half feet long, our pair of 18th century giltwood candleholders have a grand stance. Place them on a wide structure, such as a sofa table or mantel ledge for a fantastic decorative piece. They can still be used functionally as candleholders in a hallway or living room.
