About the Item

A stunning George II 8 Day Striking Japanned Longcase Clock by James Tregent, Leicester Square, London James Tregent was Clock and Watchmaker to the Prince of Wales. The Banks Collection advertises "Tregent, Watch & Clock Maker, To their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and Duke of Kent". Tregent was a flamboyant figure in London society and was involved in the theatrical world with the likes of Garrick and Sheridan. This handsome Japanned longcase clock has an arched brass dial with Roman and Arabic chapter ring enclosing a subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture, within a matted centre, the arch with strike/silent dial, all within pierced foliate scroll spandrels. The twin train movement srikes a bell within a pagoda shaped hood above an arched trunk door. Decorated with Chinoiserie scenes and sitting on a box base, this Longcase clock by a Royal Maker is a splendid example of a fine clock of this period. The clock movement has been fully cleaned and overhauled in our workshop and is running and keeping good time. The chimes are rich and mellow. Our clocks are guaranteed for a year, so in the unlikely event the clock stops running we will take it back to repair it at no additional cost. About James Tregent James Tregent, a French Huguenot watchmaker who settled in London, is listed as being active in clock and watchmaking between 1770 and 1808. His official title was 'Watchmaker to the Prince of Wales', although on his trading cards this was broadened to 'Watch and Clockmaker to the Prince of Wales'. He and his brother, Anthony, came to England together. Anthony was an enameller and part of the famous 'Battersea Enamellers' based on the south banks of Thames. He went on to establish his own shop on Denmark Street in London, and has been recorded as making dials for clocks and watches, no doubt due in part to his brother's career. Tregent became very involved in the theatrical world with the likes of Garrick and Sheridan.

Repaired: The clock movement has been fully cleaned and overhauled in our workshop. Wear consistent with age and use. Cosmetically in good condition with age related rubbing, some old losses to the paintwork typical of a clock of this age and construction. The dial is bright and clean, the engraving is crisp and clear. Hands are nicely sculptured and original.

This English George II period 18th century table clock consists in a scarlet-japanned and parcel-gilt rectangular case with elaborate chinoiserie decoration and pierced frets to the sides.
