About the Item
Direct from a Private Chateau Outside of Paris, a Magnificent Gold Plated Bronze and Black Marble Mantel Clock and Accompanying Candelabra Commemorating the Marriage of Charles V of France and Joanna de Bourbon, circa 1840s. Charles V, called the Wise, was King of France from 1364 – 1380. Joanna de Bourbon became Queen of France by Marriage to King Charles V on 8 April 1350. The Coat of Arms on the Base of the Clock Commemorates the Alliance of Their two Families.
The annals of history are often dominated by tales of great monarchs, their conquests, and their reigns. However, the pages of history also hold stories of love and relationships that shaped the destiny of nations. One such story unfolds in the 14th century, within the corridors of the French court, where King Charles the Fifth, also known as Charles the Wise, and his queen, Joanna de Bourbone, found themselves entangled in a complex web of politics, love, and duty.
The life and relationship of French King Charles the Fifth and Joanna de Bourbone provide a fascinating glimpse into a turbulent period in French history. Charles the Fifth's wise and prudent rule, coupled with Joanna's unwavering support, helped France navigate the challenges of the Hundred Years' War and emerge as a stronger and more united France. Their love and devotion to each other and to their country are a testament to the enduring power of love amidst adversity. Charles the Wise and Joanna the Graceful, as history remembers them, left an indelible mark on the annals of French royalty and continue to inspire scholars and romantics alike.
Charles the Fifth was born on January 21, 1338, in Vincennes, France, to King John the Second of France and Bonne of Bohemia. He was the eldest son of his parents and was thrust into the complexities of royal politics from an early age. His father, John the Second, was a weak and indecisive ruler, leading to a turbulent period in French history characterized by the Hundred Years' War against England and internal strife within the French nobility.
Joanna de Bourbone was born in 1338, the same year as Charles, making her an ideal candidate for a royal marriage. She was the daughter of Peter the First, Duke of Bourbone, and Isabella of Valois. Her family had a strong connection to the French royal house, making her a suitable match for the future king. In 1350, when Charles was still the Dauphin of France, he was betrothed to Joanna. The marriage was not only a union of two noble houses but also a strategic move to strengthen the monarchy's ties with the powerful Bourbone family. The wedding took place in 1350, cementing the bond between the future monarch and his queen.
This stunning gold plated bronze and black marble mantel clock, commemorating their devotion to each other and to France, measures approximately 66 cm. high, 53 cm. in length is 18 cm. deep and weights over 37 kilograms. Each candelabra, also in gold plated bronze and black marble, is approximately 61 cm. high and weights roughly 6.3 kilograms. Each of these amazing candelabra are also made of gold plated bronze and black marble. They stand roughly 61 cm. in height and each triangular base measure roughly 16 cm. in length per side.
