About the Item

An Empire ormolu and painted bronze mantel clock attributed to Jean-Simon Deverberie. Fitted in an ormolu case shaped as a cotton bale, the round enamel dial features Roman numeral hours and Arabic fifteen-minute graduations, indicated by two pierced gilt bronze hands. Shirtless and barefoot, a young black sailor is leaning against the bale, holding a cord attached to an anchor and a barrel on the other side symbolizing maritime trade. His expressive face is rendered all the more so by his painted eyes and lips, which contribute to the realistic effect of the piece. The rectangular gilt bronze base is raised upon four barrel feet and presents canted corners adorned with low-reliefs of putti unloading merchandise or doing accounts, flanked by applied allegorical trophies. The 19th century French clockmaker Jean-Simon Deverberie drew his inspiration from French philosopher Rousseau at the end of the 18th century. This delightful mantel clock presents a classical decoration characteristic of the Empire style, along with a taste for exoticism that marked the early days of Romanticism. With its original theme and the beautiful contrast between the ormolu and black painted figure, it could become the centre of attention in any room.
