An English Regency Mantel Clock in Slate & Ormolu by Grimalde & Johnson

About the Item

Whilst we don't regularly specialise in clocks, we took an exception to this one and it is perhaps the nicest we have had to date. Crafted in London during the Regency period, this table clock was made by the respected firm Grimalde & Johnson, who were in partnership between 1805 and 1825. The clock sits on a rectangular base of polished black slate with machined ormolu bun feet and an applied gilt bronze plaque of two griffins either side of an urn. The face itself has a machined dial with black roman numeral markers and is wound with a later replacement key to the centre front. The dial nestles between a pair or architectural corbels which add the slightest touch of detail whilst remaining a very restrained Regency era piece. The clock is fully signed to the backplate 'Grimalde & Johnson 431 Strand London' in an elegant cursive script. The clock and its casing have been cleaned and serviced in late 2024 and when wound keeps good time. There are only some slight losses in the form of fleabite chips to the slate, commensurate with age and use. An absolutely stellar object from the Regency period, which is still wonderfully practical! Marked - 'Grimalde & Johnson 431 Strand London' Measures - 29cm H x 18cm W x 8.5cm D
