About the Item

A fine mantle clock in black jasper dip, decorated by Bert Bentley with Sacrifice to the front. To one side, Polymnia; to the other, an unidentified female figure. Possibly Calliope. We have replaced the original movement in this to make it useful. The original movements are unreliable and cannot be repaired. Polymnia and Calliope are two of the nine muses in Greek mythology, each responsible for inspiring and guiding different forms of art and creativity. Polymnia is the muse of sacred poetry, hymns, and dance. She is often depicted with a serious and thoughtful expression, holding a finger to her lips as if deep in thought or meditation. Her name comes from the Greek word "polyhymnia," which means "many hymns," reflecting her role in inspiring music and poetry that is used in religious and ceremonial contexts. Calliope, on the other hand, is the muse of epic poetry, eloquence, and heroic songs. She is often depicted with a writing tablet or a scroll, as well as a trumpet or other musical instrument, to symbolize her role in inspiring grand and powerful works of literature and music. Her name comes from the Greek word "kalliope," which means "beautiful voice," reflecting her association with inspiring eloquence and powerful communication. In some traditions, Polymnia and Calliope are considered the daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, the goddess of memory, who spent nine nights together creating the nine muses. Together, the muses were believed to inspire and guide all forms of art and creativity, from music and poetry to dance and drama, and were revered as the ultimate sources of inspiration for artists and creatives throughout history.

Portland Vase, Northwood, Wedgwood, circa 1880
By Wedgwood
Located in Melbourne, Victoria
One of the finest copies of The Portland Vase that Wedgwood produced, in many ways rivalling the First Edition itself. Decorated by Thomas Lovatt, then cut, polished and shaded by John Northwood in his glass engraving studio. Although 30 copies were intended, the work was so exacting and arduous that in the end only thirteen were finished. The mirrored stand, which is included, is later and I think dates from the late 20th century. Of all the stands designed for the Portland Vase, this is the best I've seen. The original Portland vase, dating from around 200AD and made of cameo glass, is considered one of the most important examples of classical design and is noted for its intricate relief sculptures, which depict classical figures and scenes from Greek mythology - exactly what, though, we're not sure. The original Wedgwood Portland Vase...
