About the Item

Beautiful and very rare set of six engravings extracted from the work entitled “speculun romanae superbeiae” produced between 1554 and 1573 by Antoine Du Pérac Lafréry and representing the 200 greatest monuments of Rome The first engraving made by Antoine Lafréry, represents the three columns of the temple of Catsor in the Roman Forum, cracked and in bad condition, located in the centre of the forum, including 3 people at the feet of the columns. The second engraving depicts the Colosseum theatre in the heart of Rome, lined with greenery including two figures in the lower right. With an inscription in Latin, there is a gap of about 33 mm (height) and 6 mm (width) which a restoration made below to fill. The third engraving represents the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina located in the Roman forum. The fourth engraving represents the Mausoleum (a funerary monument of great proportions) of Cecilia Metella (Caecilia Metella died around 81 before JC, a female personality of Ancient Rome and wife of Sylla, a Roman politician). It is the best preserved and best known mausoleum of the Via Appia (the Appian Way, 500 km long, which joins Rome to Apulia). The fifth and last engraving of this set represents a stone sepulchre (tomb) (often a large square of marble) The sixth engraving shows the Duilius column. To be precise, this type of column is called "rostral column" or "Duilius column". This kind of monument was made to commemorate a naval victory or victorious sea campaigns. The one in the picture was commissioned by Caius Duilius Nepos (statesman but also general of the Roman Republic during the first Punic war) to celebrate the naval victory between the Romans and the Carthaginians at Mylae (a small town on the north-eastern coast of Sicily). Finally, an obelisk fountain which was at the time a sign of triumph, of greatness. Antoine Lafréry (Antonio Lafreri in Italian) was a professional engraver, cartographer and publisher of French origin (born in 1512 in Orgelet in the Jura, died in 1577 in Rome). He moved to Rome at the age of 28 in 1540 with his uncle and started his business there (which was confirmed 4 years later). He sold maps and prints, which allowed his reputation to spread to Europe. Between 1554 and 1573 he produced the biggest work of his life, a collection of 200 engravings revealing the artistic wealth of Rome called "speculun romanae magnificentiae". In his time as an engraver and cartographer, he collaborated with the greatest Italian engravers: Giacomo Gastaldi, Battista Agnese, Antonio Salamanca, Francesco Camocio the Younger, Ferando and Donato Bertelli and Paolo Forlani. Unframed Italie Circa 1570.
