Adriano Pompa "San Giorgio and the Dragon" Bronze Sculpture

About the Item

From contemporary Italian artist Adriano Pompa comes this striking sculpture of San Giorgio and the Dragon. Dynamic and graphically visual from every angle this faceless warrior and horse is masterfully brought to life in bronze with the serpent at their feet. The geometric patterns and details of the bronze sculpture are quite extraordinary. The figure of St. George and the dragon appeared and influenced Pompa throughout his childhood in paintings from Italian artists like Paolo Uccello and Vittore Carpaccio. And if his name sounds familiar, his father was one of Italy's most well known 20th century artists, Gaetano Pompa. "It is always a mystery to me how my artwork comes together. I feel that my curiosity of the unknown, the unknowable, what cannot be expressed in words pushes itself to the foreground....My art wants to transmit an optical pleasure: rhythm, colors, and composition in it have a hedonistic quality. Developing knowledge of craftsmanship is important to me. It is a daily Challenge to understand more about the material I am working on, whether it is oil paint, ceramics or bronze. The technical quality of my work is therefore always improving. In that sense I am an artisan, besides being an artist". Pompa has exhibited extensively in Italy and Europe including the Venice Biennale and Spoleto. In addition to sculptures, ceramics and paintings, Pompa has created a visually dynamic line of tables and tablets using lacquered tempera and engraved gold on wood with stunning images of the serpent. "My Snakes are coming from the period when this animal was a positive symbol, a sign of gods, fertility and fortune". Take a peak inside his Atelier!
