Unique Welded and Patinated Bronze Sculpture by Harry Bertoia

About the Item

A unique bronze sculpture displayed on a granite stone base circa 1973 by Harry Bertoia (1915-1978), the celebrated Italian-born American artist, sculptor, and designer. The welded and patinated bronze sculpture is highly abstract with a visually twisted body and nail-heads like protrusions, rather rate in the artist's repertoire. The sculpture strikes the viewer with a subtle but undeniable force of movement that feels contradictory to the nature of the bronze medium. The raw energy it projected, and the highly textured and irregular surface with intentional verdigris and oxidation are both iconic to the artist's signature aesthetics. The piece is heavy with a welded-in rod by the artist, which inserts into the granite base for display (the base is 3 Inches hight). The work is registered in Hary Bertoia catalogue Raisonne as S.WF.270 Provenance: Group Artec, exhibited October 1973 Robert Bourseau, Los Angeles, November 1973 (purchased from above). Private Collection 2023 (by bequest).
