About the Item

Breathtaking porcelain peacock by Nymphenburg, the sculptor Theodor Ka¨rner created in 1906. This model was is signed and dated by the artist in 1912. This piece is also marked with the Nymphenburg impressed mark on the underside. The brush work on this piece is remarkable Today this counts as one of the most familiar and outstanding animal figures produced by Porzellan Manufacture Nymphenburg. Its elegant shape is realized by under glaze painting that was already developed to perfection at the beginning of the 20th century. In this technique, the paint is applied by brush or airbrush immediately after mild firing but before the porcelain is immersed in the glaze. Following firing, the resulting layers of color are transparent and possess the most attractive gradations. The wealth of colors in the Tavous peacock's display is reflected in the understated shades, which are typical for this method of painting. Like no other, Theodor Ka¨rner has been able to "restrain the naturalism of the form to the extent that it doesn't distract from the stylized colorful decoration.
