Large Chinese Foo lion. Predominantly green glaze with golden yellow detail attributed to Tang Dynasty glaze coloring. This unusually large foo dog displays fierce countenances. It hold the traditional 'ball'. Typically seen as part of a pair guarding an entrance. Museum quality. No maker marks observed.
According to historical books, lions were introduced into Mainland China firstly as tributes to the Emperors. They are symbols of justice in bureaucratic officialdom and loyal guards in front of Emperors or Princes' palaces. This one is for the connoisseurs, because it ticks all the Arts and Crafts boxes. The first owner who would have had this piece custom made or who bought it from one of the best craftsman/manufacturers in the early Arts & Crafts era (1890-1900) simply had incredibly good taste. This likely German made antique is among the best workmanship pieces that you will ever see and both design and materials wise it is most likely made by WMF (who need no further introduction). The artisan metal worker who crafted this lidded bucket took things to a whole new level, because this is a true work of art and a statement piece of unsurpassed quality, size and detail. The Polar bear beautifully carved with a naturalistic look finished with cabochon ruby eyes stood upon a natural rock crystal base simulating an iceberg. Beautiful vintage Murano hand blown Sommerso soft transparent champagne with a hint of purple Italian art glass fish on base sculpture. Documented to designer Dino Martens for Aureliano Toso, circa 1950s. Published in his book (see photo), model 6180, and a later model number 6913 is in the same shape. The fish has little blue murine eyes, with white Latticino ribbons on the fins and tail. It is balanced on a clear glass base. Would make a great display piece on any dresser, coffee table, or display cabinet. Mid-century era. Would make a great addition to any Nautical, Marine / Ocean theme room. Measures: 10 5/8" tall x 6 1/2" long x 3 1/2" wide. Last photo shows other colors currently available in the gallery.
