Art Deco Neapolitan 'Scugnizzo' Bust by De Martino, Gilt and Burnished Bronze
By Neapolitan Craftsman
Located in Vigonza, Padua
Neapolitan "Scugnizzo" bust, Street boy, in gilt and burnished bronze, circa 1920 by Giovanni De Martino . Sculpture in gilded bronze and dark patina on a square base in light gray marble. The realistic trait typical of the author is striking. Signature of the artist De Martino on the back Giovanni De Martino (Naples, 13 January 1870 - Naples, 3 March 1935) was an Italian sculptor active in Paris. Important Bronze sculpture depicting a boy's head in Naples called "Scugnizzo" Excellent quality and sublime workmanship, note the delicacy and expressiveness. The sculpture is signed DE MARTINO on the back. GIOVANNI DE MARTINO (Naples 1870-1935) very important sculptor known for the production of sculptures of small bronze busts, in particular street urchins, fishermen, common people, with realistic features. Excellent quality, as seen in the detail photos. Excellent workmanship. A truly beautiful sculpture! BIOGRAPHY OF THE ARTIST Giovanni de Martino (1870-1935) trained in Naples at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples. He moved to Paris where he performed small sculptural groups and frequently exhibited at the "Paris Salon", winning the Louvre Museum prize for the bronze work Le Pêcheur de criquets (The Locust Fisherman). Returning to Naples, he returned to a socialist realism and on dedication to the production of sculptures depicting characteristic Neapolitan types, in rascal species, "scugnizzi", children and young fishermen. The dominant theme of his production is childhood: in particular he represents in his works pensive, sad, skinny children, on whose faces the signs of abandonment and suffering emerge (for this reason De Martino becomes known with the nickname of "The sculptor of children...

Four years later he settled in Rome, and from 1844 he worked in Bertel Thorvaldsen's former studio. Eugene Kormendi-Frim, Head, Hand-Carved Ebonized Wood Sculpture, circa 1930s
By Ervin Kormendi-Frim
Located in New York, NY
Eugene (Jenő) Körmendi-Frim (1889–1959) was a renowned Hungarian-American sculptor, coming from a family of artists. His brother, Erwin Kormendi-Frim (1885 – 1939) was famous Hungarian painter known for his still life’s and portraits in a style developed under the influence of Cézanne. His cousin was Philip Alexius de László, (Hungarian: László Fülöp Elek, 1869 –1937), an Anglo-Hungarian painter known particularly for his portraits of royal and aristocratic personages. Eugene (Jenő) studied at the Academy of Budapest, and then traveled to Paris to work with Auguste Rodin and Jean Paul Lorenz. In 1939, he visited America for the New York World’s Fair with his wife, Elizabeth, a painter and ceramist. During their tour, World War II broke out in Eastern Europe and they were unable to return home. Eugene found a position as sculptor-in-residence at Notre Dame University that allowed them to stay in the United States. He created many statues while at the university, including a war memorial in Valparaiso, Indiana, and a twenty-two foot-statue depicting Christ as the “Light of the World...

Large American White Marble Bust of a Gentleman by Randolph Rogers
By Randolph Rogers
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Fine 19th century white carved marble bust of a gentleman with mustache wearing a Toga. Signed: Randolph Rogers, Rome. Randolph John Rogers (July 6, 1825, Waterloo, New York – January 15, 1892, Rome, Italy) was an American Neoclassical sculptor. An expatriate who lived most of his life in Italy, his works ranged from popular subjects to major commissions, including the Columbus Doors at the U.S. Capitol and American Civil War monuments. Born in Waterloo, New York, he spent most of his childhood in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He developed an interest in wood cuts and wood engraving, and moved to New York City about 1847, but was unsuccessful in finding employment as an engraver. While working as a clerk in a dry-goods store, his employers discovered his native talent as a sculptor and provided funds for him to travel to Italy. He began study in Florence in 1848, where he studied briefly under Lorenzo Bartolini. He then opened a studio in Rome in 1851. He resided in that city until his death in 1892. He began his career carving statues of children and portrait busts of tourists. He was not happy working with marble consequently all his marble statues were copied in his studio by Italian artisans under his supervision, from an original produced by him in another material. This also enabled him to profit from his popular works. His first large-scale work was Ruth Gleaning...

Shop Mid-Century Modern Busts, Neoclassical Busts and More

The presence of vintage and antique bust sculptures can add a necessary decorative layer to any interior. And just because a statue looks classical doesn't mean it has to be conventional.

A touch of whimsy, a dose of drama — a single bust can alter a room. And when placed in just the right spot, these statues can almost feel alive.

“They give humanity in a way that a more abstract sculpture can’t give,” says Los Angeles designer Timothy Corrigan, who loves pieces that beg to be touched. For a welcoming entry hall project in California, Corrigan selected an antique Persian rug and a bust that invites you to touch it. A collection of sculptures in wood, marble and brass complement the star of the show.

For Consort cofounder and creative director Mat Sanders, a bust doesn’t have to be pretty. “I most enjoy busts that are a little busted,” Sanders jokes — but choose something with a soul you can live with, as “sculpture representative of the human form carries with it an energy you will add to the space.”

The antique and vintage bust sculptures for sale on 1stDibs include Art Deco busts, mid-century modern busts and more.
