About the Item

Carrier-Belleuse was admitted to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1840. Noted for his skill by the great houses working bronze in Paris such as Barbedienne or Denière, he soon received numerous orders for decorative objects: candelabras, clocks, fireplace decorations, etc. Carrier-Belleuse devoted himself extensively to sculpture and contributed to the decoration of important buildings, such as the pediment above the main entrance of the Bank of France, the frieze of the Palais de la Bourse in Brussels, for the Paris Opera, he created, among other things, 2 monumental torches for the grand staircase. Carrier-Belleuse was, towards the end of his life, director of art works at the Manufacture de Sèvres. His time there was marked by the renewal of the collections and the modernization of the style.
